Mind.  Body.  Balls.

Register for The Prostate Cancer Games on Sept. 23, 2023

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS AMAZING PROJECT

Score Men’s Wellness is a health initiative designed to save men from themselves by getting them more involved in preventive care.

Men must be more informed about their changing healthcare needs as they approach middle age. There is an abundance of information that men will never read. We will educate men with a radically different approach.

Preventive health is easy and affordable. Reactive health, on the other hand, is costly, labor-intensive, and potentially fatal. The best defense against any disease is early detection through screening.

Although this project addresses men’s health, the reference to balls is probably not what you think. Ok, maybe there is a bit of a double entendre going on. Getting involved in preventive health takes balls, but we are really talking about ball games.

Steve Becker Publicity

I’m writing this letter as a show of support for John Griffith and his message to all men to take their health seriously.

As a publicist specializing in booking authors and experts on radio shows–and podcasts–coast to coast, I worked with John on his promotional campaign for his excellent book A Dad’s Fun Guide to Raising Happy Daughters. John is the real deal–a sincere and passionate dad, author and friend. Although we’ve only met via phone calls and emails, and separated by about 1700 miles between my home in New Hampshire and his in Texas, I’m proud to call John a friend.

Which brings me to John’s latest book Lucky Man: Memoir of a Prostate Cancer Survivor. It’s a refreshingly candid, honest and funny read, filled with intense, attention-grabbing illustrations, all with one goal in mind–to encourage men to take care of their prostate! It’s powerful. It’s entertaining.

I’ve been booking guests on the ‘listening media’ for over 20 years, and John was a radio rock star during his campaign for A Dad’s Fun Guide to Raising Happy Daughters a few years ago. I believe he would be doing a public service by speaking about Lucky Man on radio and podcasts. Men need to listen to his message! I can think of a number of shows and hosts that would welcome John to speak out on preventing–and beating–prostate cancer.

Dr. Michael D. Shortt, PA-C, DSc

John,

I really appreciate the opportunity to support you in your efforts to educate men and take the mystery out of prostate health in such a creative way.

In my line of work as a testosterone replacement therapy provider, I frequently witness men striving to achieve maximum performance and testosterone levels, often overlooking the importance of preventative measures to screen for prostate cancer.

The information we clinicians provide to our patients is often interpreted as complex and sterile until something is wrong. Then a patient must deal with a potentially life-changing diagnosis, frequently too late. You confront men’s taboos and insecurities in this eloquent, illustrated work, and powerfully express the perspective of an actual patient experience and journey.

VIOLATED!!! is insightful, illuminating, and can save many lives while serving as an essential preventative screening tool. I am confident this work can inspire men to confront their gender-specific healthcare challenges and better understand prostate health issues.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael D. Shortt, PA-C, DSc McKinney, TX

Anand Shivnani, MD, Texas Oncology-McKinney

Having taken care of cancer patients over the last 20 years, I have been amazed at the advances I have witnessed in radiation oncology.  A patient with prostate cancer who would have previously been treated with 44 sessions of radiation over 9 weeks, may today now consider treatment in just 5 days.  Similarly, we have seen remarkable advances in prostate imaging, surgery and systemic therapy.

Despite these advances, John reminds us that the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer is no less terrifying than it was 20 years ago.  While we, as clinicians, try to improve the effectiveness of treatment and reduce side effects – cancer care is first and foremost, a human endeavor.  It is a privilege to listen to our patients’ stories (like John’s) and try to provide comfort, empathy, and understanding during the cancer journey.

Anand Shivnani, MD, Texas Oncology-McKinney

Dr. YS Ram Rao, MD, Medical Director, Radiation Oncology and Cancer Program

I have treated many prostate cancer patients whose outcomes could have been much better had their cancer been detected sooner. As a population, men have little interest in prostate health until it is often too late. John’s approach is refreshing, written man to man instead of from a medical professional.

When men read this powerful graphic-novel testimony written by a changed man after being diagnosed with prostate cancer while seeking testosterone replacement therapy, they might finally listen and change how they engage in preventive health.

Tobenna Nwizu, MD, Texas Oncology-Allen

To Whom It May Concern,

I applaud John’s initiative and what he has accomplished. His cancer story is a story of success that many men need to hear.

John’s approach is witty and appealing to men; a comic book to educate men about the importance of prostate health, and a sporting event to raise public awareness.

I am happy to support this endeavor and encourage other physicians and interested parties to learn more about John’s project.

Sincerely,

Tobenna Nwizu, MD, Texas Oncology-Allen

Special Thanks

I was very private about my cancer journey until I knew the outcome. Only a select few were aware. I even kept the information from my own children for their sake. I want to give special recognition to the people below for supporting me through my journey.

Yudy, my wife

From the very day I was told I had cancer, you have stood strong and stayed positive. You have no idea how helpful that was throughout my journey. You are a mountain in a world made of stones.

Mark, my brother

Your wisdom, empathy, and spiritual guidance lifted me at times when I needed it most.

Vivek Rao, CEO, and Victor Gebhardt, COO of Foundation AI

I worked with you at the time of my diagnosis and throughout my treatment at Foundation AI, a startup. My cancer and treatment impacted my ability to give you 100% effort. Yet, you both were compassionate and supportive, allowing me to give what I could when I could. You make the human race better.

YS Ram Rao, MD, Radiation Oncologist

Although we have never met in person, you spent your personal time speaking with me after being introduced by my very dear friend and your son, Vivek Rao. You explained the many options available to me in detail and the post-treatment effects I should expect. Your explanations were instrumental in my decision.

Damon Dietrich, MD, System Chief Medical Information Officer for LCMC Health, Louisiana

You are among my best friends. You always calm me when we speak about alarming topics, a gift few have in this world. You are calm in the midst of a storm, my friend. Like others, you explained the many options available to me in detail and the post-treatment effects I should expect. Your explanations were instrumental in my decision.

John Ryan Glass, MD, Urologist at West Jefferson Hospital, New Orleans

Although we have never met in person, you spent your personal time speaking with me after being introduced by our very dear friend Damon Dietrich, MD. You explained the surgery options and the post-treatment effects I should expect. Your explanation was invaluable.

Tobenna "Toby" Nwizu, M.D., hematologist and medical oncologist / Texas Oncology–Allen

Dr. Nwizu, you treated me for a non-cancerous blood condition. Every time I visited your clinic, I was amazed at the energy and joy bubbling from your staff and some very sick cancer patients. When I was diagnosed, I did not have to think twice about where I wanted to go for treatment. As an excellent physician, you make use of the most potent medicine of all; humor, optimism, and smiles.

Anand Shivnani, M.D., radiation oncologist at Texas Oncology–McKinney

Dr. Shivnani, I witnessed the same joy at your location as Dr. Nwizu’s; you and your staff were energetic, and the overall vibe was one of authentic positivity. It was one of those happy spaces in a place I didn’t expect to see happiness. And you are of hell of a sharpshooter, a master of a very lethal weapon – the radiation gun. You knocked the crap out of those cancer cells and left the good ones unharmed.

Natalie O'Roark, Executive Director, Texas Oncology Foundation, and Micah Parks, Regional Oncology Liaison Manager Texas Oncology

After I recovered, I knew I could help men be better healthcare participants, but I wasn’t sure how. With your advice and education, I was able to put this initiative together. You both helped me transform a spark of an idea into a raging flame.

Dr. Michael D. Shortt, PA-C, DSc McKinney, TX

We first met when I was seeking Testosterone Replacement Therapy – you were the doctor, and I was the patient. My PSA score was high, but you could have proceeded with hormone therapy and ignored the elevated PSA. Many men are unaware that testosterone feeds prostate cancer. You refused to administer testosterone until I was first cleared by a urologist. I was frustrated that day, but your adherence to principles ultimately led to my in-the-nick-of-time diagnosis and life-saving treatment. Yes, I lost my “virginity” (I had never had a prostate exam when I met Michael), but I have my life. I will take that trade anyway.

Quoc-Hung Tran MD PA

Dr. Tran, you are my doctor for reasons that have nothing to do with the prostate, colon, stomach, testicles, hearts, lungs, or any of those parts that have the highest impact on men’s health. Yet, you always push me to actively participate in age-appropriate healthcare exams outside your domain. I wish all doctors had the same holistic care for their patients.

Shado and Lys Childs-Wiley of Carpe Diem Comics in Historic Downtown McKinney

Your comic book store – Carpe Diem Comics – in downtown McKinney is by far the best comic store I have ever experienced. Carpe Diem truly is -as your website states – McKinney’s home for Imagitainment. As I worked through the creation of my graphic novel – a new genre for me – I had many questions, and you answered them all. Your counsel and knowledge of the comic and graphic novel art genre were invaluable as we created this one-of-a-kind graphic novel. We will help men punch through their egos and become more active in their health before it is too late. We will save lives so that men can “Alium Diem Vivere.”
